Electrification is transforming shared mobility but making zero-emission systems work at scale comes with real challenges. In this session, cities and operators explore practical solutions, from fixed charging infrastructure for e-bike sharing to using AI to optimise charging networks and fleet operations. Expect sharp insights, honest lessons and bold ideas on how to power the shift. Because going electric is only the beginning: sharing the electricity is what makes zero emissions possible.

Beyond the Battery Swap: What It Really Takes to Scale E-Bike Fleets -  Alessia di Maio

Scaling an e-bike fleet can seem like a simple, obvious win. But for many operators, it also means scaling a logistical bottleneck: e-bike battery swapping means more vans on the streets, more emissions, more congestion, and higher costs.

In this session, Lyft Urban Solutions' Alessia di Maio shares lessons learned through LUS' 15+ years powering bikeshare systems around the world: what happens when logistics can't keep up with demand, and why transitioning to in-dock charging is the only path to sustainable scale.

Let's stop moving batteries, and start electrifying the curb.

Donau Donkeys, operated by Feine Räder GmbH / CEO

From Germany

Short bio

Ulrich Schmack founded the Donau Donkeys in 2020 and is the driving force behind the cargo bike-sharing system. Coming from the renewable energy sector, he has also developed the necessary public charging infrastructure for his electric bikes, which either tap into existing power sources like streetlights or operate entirely independently using solar panels. With the Donau Donkeys’ cargo bikes, Ulrich’s primary goal is to enable people to transport children and belongings for which a car is typically used. A broad network of hosts, many of whom are volunteers, ensures the system’s high quality, as there are always plenty of eyes keeping watch over the bikes.
